Professional Makeup for a Photoshoot: What, How, and When?

When planning a photoshoot, amidst numerous decisions – such as selecting a photographer, choosing a package, and finding available time – another crucial choice arises: should we bring a makeup artist to the set, or proceed without one? The main arguments against hiring a makeup artist are undoubtedly the cost and time commitment, along with potential concerns about the makeup’s final appearance.

Makeup is typically associated with women, so I will begin there. Many women believe that when visiting a photographer, doing their own makeup is sufficient. While this decision sometimes doesn’t lead to complications, it’s important to consider that even impressive and well-applied makeup might not perform optimally under photoshoot conditions. This environment has its own unique demands. A professional’s assistance ensures a predictable outcome, eliminating the risk of makeup appearing too intense or skin looking overly shiny under flash photography.

Makeup for Men

For men, to achieve a predictable and consistent result, it is advisable to use professional makeup, including foundation and liquid makeup. This helps to conceal skin imperfections that powder alone cannot address, such as discolorations and unevenness, which are difficult to remove effectively during post-processing.

Gentlemen, please dismiss any concerns – you will not appear effeminate in the photos. The makeup is invisible and does not alter your masculine facial features 🙂

Hairstylist for a Photoshoot

Ladies often inquire whether hairdressing services are included in the makeup price. Our makeup artist will smooth your hair and use hairspray to manage any stray strands. However, it is important to note that this is not a full hairdressing service, but rather hair styling; therefore, scissors or clippers will not be used. If you require curls/waves or hair straightening, please arrange this with us in advance, as we do not have curling irons or straighteners on site. We also do not have a hair wash station, so we recommend ensuring your hair is clean and non-greasy before the session.

Photoshoot Without Makeup

Finally, for those who, despite the information provided, choose not to opt for professional makeup: the cost of every portrait session in our studio includes powdering. Therefore, the results can still be satisfactory. They will undoubtedly be superior to using vacation photos, phone pictures, or ID photos for your CV. Thus, even with a limited budget and time, it is worthwhile to visit us! ➤ Photographer in Warsaw

Advice from Our Makeup Artist

One week before your session, avoid any intensive skin treatments. The evening prior, ensure your skin is thoroughly hydrated (avoid acids; a cream or gentle mask will suffice) and exfoliate your lips (a homemade method: sugar with olive oil, gently massage, rinse, then apply a lip oil). Immediately before the session, reapply a moisturizing cream and a moisturizing lip balm. When performing your skincare routine, please pay special attention to the delicate skin around your eyes.
